Fixing Up For Autumn: DIY projects for the AutumnAugust 16, 2019
It’s time to get your home ready for the colder months. Here are a few DIY projects that you can work on this Autumn.
As summer comes to an end, we say goodbye to spending our evenings in the garden. However, it’s not time to close the door just yet. Before the winter sets in prepare your garden and get it ready for next spring. We recommend cleaning the exterior of your house and any pavement, stones or decking with a power washer, this will help prevent dirt from building up. If you have stoned pavement such as limestone you should seal this before the winter months, this is recommended to do every 3 years.
If you really want to freshen up the exterior of your home this is also a great time to give the walls and decking a lick of paint. Having the outside of your home looking clean and fresh can really help brighten up those gloomy days.
Keep outside alive
To keep your garden alive over the winter you need to start preparing for it in the Autumn. Fertilizing your grass now will renew the growth of both blades and roots. This will keep your grass healthy so it will be nice thick and green up faster come springtime.
Here in Ireland we all know it rains, a lot! Make sure your garden doesn’t get flooded or waterlogged this winter by ensuring your drainage is up to scratch now. Make sure to clean all drains and replace any broken covers.
As the cold weather gets closer you start dreaming of sitting in front of a warm fire but we bet you haven’t given your fireplace much attention since the last fire you lit. Getting your fireplace ready will ensure it is safe for all your winter fires. Make sure to give it a good clean and get it checked to make sure it is functioning properly.
Having a full supply of logs and coal is essential for the cold winter evening, think about where you’re going to store them this year, maybe consider clearing a space in your shed and adding shelving or going all out and building purpose-built storage in your garden.
Keep It In
Now that your fire is sorted make sure to keep all the heat inside this winter. One of the biggest reasons for loss of heat is often ignored by air leaks. Inspect the seals around windows and replace any old or damaged weather stripping around your exterior doors to prevent drafts.
The spring clean in a well-coined term and something you may even have done a few months ago. So why not do an autumn clean now? As you switch out many of your summer things for winter ones this is a perfect time to deep clean, organise and clear out.
We suggest cleaning carpets ahead of the winter season and washing upholstery while the weather is still good enough to let things air dry!
