Spruce Up Your House for the New YearDecember 19, 2018
The new year is here! This means that it’s time for a fresh start and new beginnings. There’s no better way to get into the spirit than sprucing up a few things around the house. Here are 5 tips for helping to re-invigorate your house for the new year.
1. Clean the carpets and polish the floors
It’s time to call the cleaners. If you have carpet, you can hire a service to come and give them a deep clean or rent a carpet cleaner to handle it yourself. This year should be about showing your house off and not revealing stains from the previous years. For those with hardwood floors, find the time to polish them up. After the work is completed try not to be surprised at the difference it makes throughout the room.
2. Fresh coat of paint
Painting your living room or dining room sounds like a hassle. But the effort is more than worth the end result. Grab a warm, cozy colour to help set the mood. Even though it’s the winter try to pick a colour that is refreshing and will work year-round. If you’re pressed for time consider painting the foyer or guest bathroom. These are smaller areas but a fresh coat of paint will rejuvenate the room. Plus, it will definitely lead to a flurry of compliments from future guests.
3. Go DIY
Make a new memo board or create some homemade wall art. Going to the store for decorations is easy but creating something yourself will create an atmosphere that is even more special. This is also a good time to involve the family. There are easy crafts that your children can do like making bird feeders or art to adorn their bedroom walls.
4. Make it Shine
Outside and indoors, lights are a huge staple of your house whether they are illuminating the front yard or adding brightness to a room. However, don’t let your everyday lighting fixtures become overshadowed. Look into purchasing new lighting fixtures throughout your house. Something as simple as sconces on your mantle will really help to make your fireplace and living room shine.
5. Keep it fresh
Fresh flowers are the best and easiest way to create a natural aroma throughout the house. For those that don’t want to deal with the upkeep of flowers, there are still ways to add a crisp scent to your home. Skip the candles and use something a bit more natural. Placing pinecones throughout the house can help to add some decor and enhance the smell of the house. You can even mix it up by adding other festive plant life throughout your home.
